What If? The Questions That Will Haunt the Pumas After Twickenham Final

Date:

The Argentinian team will leave London with their heads held high but their hearts heavy with the haunting question of “what if?” Their narrow defeat to South Africa in the Rugby Championship final was a game of pivotal moments and fine margins, leaving a trail of painful questions in its wake.
What if the match had been played in the cauldron of Buenos Aires instead of the pro-Bok atmosphere of Twickenham? The impact of their passionate home support is unquantifiable but undeniably significant, and its absence was keenly felt.
What if Canan Moodie had been shown a second yellow card for his deliberate knockdown in the first half? Facing a 14-man Springbok side for over 40 minutes would have presented a golden opportunity for the Pumas to seize control of the game.
What if Santiago Carreras’s late penalty had sailed a few inches to the left instead of striking the upright? A successful kick would have set up a nerve-wracking finale and given the Pumas all the momentum.
These are the questions that will linger long after the final whistle. While South Africa are deserved champions, Argentina’s performance was worthy of more than just a runner-up medal. They were close, agonizingly close, to a historic triumph, and the “what ifs” will be the hardest part of the loss to accept.
