Ignited on Wednesday afternoon in San Luis Obispo county, the fire’s aggressive spread is attributed to scorching temperatures and strong, gusty winds, intensifying the danger as the Fourth of July holiday weekend approaches.
Evacuation orders and warnings have been issued for tiny communities near State Route 166 as the flames move through hilly terrain. The fire is also threatening the Carrizo Plain National Monument, a vital natural area approximately 125 miles (200km) northwest of Los Angeles, known for its vast grasslands and beautiful wildflowers. Protecting these areas and their residents is the immediate focus of emergency responders.
Weather conditions are proving to be a major obstacle for the hundreds of firefighters on the ground.
