Dubai is poised to advance its aviation infrastructure with the development of an extensive autonomous people mover network at Al Maktoum International Airport. This ambitious project will span 50 kilometers, featuring nine stations to facilitate passenger movement across the sprawling airport complex. Aiming for completion by December 2031, the construction aligns with the scheduled opening of the airport’s first phase in 2032. As the airport expands, the driverless underground rail system is set to grow to 14 stations, cementing its status as the largest automated people mover network in the world, surpassing the scale of those at major airports like Dallas Fort Worth and JFK in New York.
Al Maktoum International Airport is being designed to eventually accommodate up to 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo annually. The initial phase will see the development of the West Terminal, Concourse 1, and the introduction of the new people mover system, significantly enhancing the airport’s capacity to welcome 130 million passengers each year.
The strategic expansion of this airport includes plans for wider rail connectivity, which will enhance its accessibility and integration with the region’s transport network. Among the key connections is the proposed Airport Express Link, which will bridge Al Maktoum International with the existing Dubai International Airport. Additionally, future plans involve linking the airport to Etihad Rail and the Dubai Metro, further consolidating Dubai’s position as a global transport hub.
