IMF Highlights Rising Global Economic Risks from Energy, Debt, and AI Investments

Date:

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a stark warning about the increasing threats to global economic stability, citing geopolitical tensions, rising government debt, and uncertainties surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) investments as key factors. In its October 2026 World Economic Outlook, unveiled at the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, the Fund highlighted the global economy’s vulnerability despite a slight upward revision of its growth forecast for 2026 to 3.1%, with expectations of 3.4% growth in 2027.

According to the IMF, the resilience of economies in coping with the Middle East conflict has been facilitated by emergency oil reserves and the reallocation of energy supplies. Nonetheless, the Fund cautioned that dwindling inventories and limited state resources might hinder future responses to energy disruptions. A protracted conflict could exacerbate energy prices, inflate inflation rates, and strain government finances, particularly in energy-dependent and low-income nations.

Inflation is predicted to reach 4.7% in 2026, with a slight decrease to 4.1% in 2027. The IMF advised central banks to monitor inflationary pressures closely while avoiding overreactions to temporary fluctuations. The importance of responsible fiscal policies in managing inflation and sustaining economic stability was also emphasized.

In terms of regional forecasts, the United States is anticipated to grow by 2.3% in both 2026 and 2027. The UK economy is projected to expand by 1.3% in 2026, while Japan’s growth is forecast at 0.7%. The euro area’s growth is expected to be 1.1% in 2026 and 1.2% in 2027. Emerging and developing economies are predicted to see growth of 3.7% in 2026, accelerating to 4.4% in 2027, though geopolitical developments and energy market disruptions could significantly impact these projections.

The IMF highlighted the rapid expansion of AI investment as a potential risk, suggesting that disappointing returns or a downturn in technology stock valuations could adversely affect financial markets, investment levels, and global economic growth. The Fund stressed the need for policymakers to bolster economic safeguards and take timely actions to protect long-term growth and financial stability amid these multifaceted challenges.
