The state visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the strengthening strategic alliance between the two nations. This relationship, which spans decades, is rooted in robust political, economic, energy, and cultural collaborations. The diplomatic ties between the UAE and Germany were first established in 1972, and since then, the relationship has flourished, particularly in the realms of trade and investment. Last year, bilateral trade reached over Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), solidifying the UAE’s position as Germany’s foremost trading partner in the Gulf region.
Germany’s economic footprint in the UAE is substantial, with approximately 2,000 German businesses operating within the country. Among these are renowned corporations such as BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn. The energy sector has also seen significant cooperation, with both nations collaborating on initiatives related to renewable energy, climate action, decarbonization, and energy security. In 2022, this partnership was further cemented through an agreement that aimed to bolster energy security and industrial cooperation. This included the UAE’s supply of liquefied natural gas to Germany and joint ventures centered on clean energy and climate projects.
Beyond trade and energy, the UAE and Germany have nurtured a broad partnership that encompasses research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. The foundation of their political relationship was enhanced in 2004 with a strategic partnership agreement that addressed regional security, economic collaboration, and research initiatives. This comprehensive approach has ensured that the ties between the two nations remain resilient, even in the face of global political and economic challenges.
Despite these challenges, the UAE and Germany continue to fortify their relationship, expanding cooperation in various strategic sectors. The enduring nature of this partnership highlights a mutual commitment to collaboration and shared interests, paving the way for future initiatives and engagements.
