Moscow: In a rare breakthrough amidst the ongoing war, Russia and Ukraine have agreed to halt military operations in the Black Sea, marking a crucial step toward de-escalation. However, key negotiations remain unfinished, as Moscow ties the deal to potential relief from Western sanctions.
The ceasefire agreement was reached following three days of US-led discussions in Saudi Arabia. While a comprehensive peace settlement remains elusive, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the talks as “right steps” toward ending hostilities and securing a just resolution.
The United States confirmed that the deal will ensure safe navigation in the Black Sea, prevent the use of force in the region, and prohibit the use of commercial vessels for military operations. A White House statement also revealed that Ukraine and Russia are working on measures to uphold commitments made in calls between former US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Zelenskyy—particularly regarding the ban on strikes targeting energy infrastructure in both nations.
The Black Sea has been a contentious battleground, with both Russia and Ukraine attacking cargo ships and restricting maritime routes. This ceasefire, if upheld, could ease regional tensions and safeguard vital trade corridors crucial to global markets.
