Trump Urges Putin to Halt Strikes After Deadly Attack on Kyiv Amid Peace Talks

Date:

Former U.S. President Donald Trump made a rare public plea to Russian President Vladimir Putin following a devastating missile and drone assault on Kyiv, Ukraine, that left at least nine dead and more than 70 injured.
“I am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV. Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, urging Putin to finalize a peace deal. The strikes marked the deadliest on Ukraine’s capital since July and came at a critical juncture in ongoing peace efforts.
The attack, which lasted nearly 11 hours, targeted multiple neighborhoods in Kyiv and surrounding regions. The Ukrainian air force reported over 200 projectiles, including ballistic missiles and Shahed drones, launched by Russia. Rescue crews worked overnight, pulling victims from rubble as air raid sirens continued to echo across the city.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who cut short his diplomatic trip to South Africa, condemned the assault as “one of Russia’s most outrageous.” He reiterated that any peace negotiation hinges on Moscow, citing that Ukraine had agreed to a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal 44 days ago—yet the attacks persist.
Kyiv’s Mayor Vitalii Klitschko declared Friday a day of mourning. Emergency shelters across the city were overwhelmed as families—many with pets—fled collapsing buildings. Victims, including children, suffered injuries from shattered glass and crumbling walls.
International leaders condemned the assault. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas labeled Russia’s peace claims a “mockery,” while Ukrainian officials warned that continued aggression proves Moscow’s unwillingness to negotiate sincerely.
As talks stall and casualties rise, Trump’s tone suggests mounting frustration with both sides. However, Ukrainian officials insist that peace without territorial integrity is not an option.
