Abu Dhabi Police’s Ramadan Cannon: A Timeless Symbol of Heritage and Tradition

Date:

The firing of the Ramadan cannon by Abu Dhabi Police is more than just a signal for Iftar—it is a powerful link to the UAE’s deep-rooted history and cultural traditions.

Once a tool of defense, the cannon at Al Maqta Tower has evolved into an enduring symbol of celebration, fired upon the sighting of the Ramadan or Eid crescent as per the directives of the ruling leadership. This cherished practice, highlighted by the Abu Dhabi Media Office, continues today, allowing communities to relive historical customs while ensuring the preservation of the UAE’s heritage for generations to come.

Lt. Col. Ali Al Hammadi, head of the Police Legacy Department at Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, emphasized the profound significance of the Al Maqta cannon.

“In the past, Al Maqta Tower stood as a testament to Abu Dhabi’s growth and security. Travelers crossing Al Maqta Creek would see the tower standing tall, with the cannon serving as a beacon of protection and trust. Even today, the Al Maqta Iftar cannon fills our hearts with joy and pride,” he said.

Abu Dhabi Police remains deeply committed to upholding the emirate’s traditions. The force has long been a custodian of its own legacy, establishing a Police Heritage Centre to document and preserve its rich history. This initiative not only honors the past but also ensures that the stories of Abu Dhabi’s security and resilience continue to inspire future generations.

Through the Ramadan cannon and similar traditions, Abu Dhabi Police reinforces its role as both a protector of the people and a guardian of cultural heritage, bridging the past with the present in a celebration of unity and faith.
