Iran, UAE Aim to Boost Economic Ties Before Hormuz Security Discussions

Date:

At the recent BRICS Summit held in New Delhi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed a commitment to mending ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). After engaging in discussions with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed, Pezeshkian emphasized a mutual desire to move beyond past disputes and focus on future collaboration. This diplomatic outreach comes amid ongoing regional tensions, with countries in the area aiming to enhance cooperation on matters of security and the management of vital shipping routes.

In a notable development, Iranian officials are slated to engage in talks with representatives from Gulf nations and Iraq in Oman on September 14. The agenda for these discussions will concentrate on regional security and the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The planned meeting aims to foster greater understanding and to bolster collective security efforts among the participating countries. However, Bahrain has announced its decision not to take part in these talks.

During the summit, President Pezeshkian also advocated for increased economic collaboration among BRICS nations. He proposed the use of national currencies in trade to strengthen financial mechanisms, arguing that the current dependence on existing global financial systems leaves emerging economies susceptible to external pressures. He urged BRICS members to enhance their economic resilience and to unite against unilateral sanctions and attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Pezeshkian highlighted Iran’s advantageous position, rich energy resources, and well-established transit networks as potential contributors to the development of trade and energy corridors that could benefit BRICS economies. With the Strait of Hormuz being a focal point of heightened tensions, these diplomatic initiatives underscore the importance of regional dialogue and cooperation for ensuring security and the stability of global energy supplies.
