Russia Steps In as Mediator Between US and Iran Amid Nuclear Tensions

Date:

Moscow: In a significant diplomatic development, Russia has agreed to mediate between the United States and Iran regarding Tehran’s nuclear program. According to a report by Bloomberg, Moscow is positioning itself as a key player in easing tensions while simultaneously maintaining its support for regional groups opposed to US influence.

Former US President Donald Trump has expressed his interest in brokering peace between Russia and Ukraine while also addressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Following a phone conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, senior officials from both nations convened in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, last month to discuss these pressing geopolitical issues.

Russian state media, citing Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, reported that Moscow advocates diplomatic resolution between Washington and Tehran. “Russia believes the United States and Iran should engage in dialogue to resolve their differences, and we are prepared to facilitate this process in any way we can,” Peskov stated.

Last month, Trump reinstated his “maximum pressure” policy on Iran, aiming to curtail Tehran’s oil exports to zero in an effort to prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons. However, Iran has consistently denied any pursuit of nuclear arms.

Commenting on Russia’s willingness to assist in diplomatic efforts, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghai remarked that international cooperation in resolving such matters is expected. “Given the significance of these discussions, multiple parties may demonstrate goodwill and readiness to contribute toward a resolution,” Baghai stated.

US Cuts Off Intelligence Sharing with Ukraine
Meanwhile, Washington has not only suspended military aid to Ukraine but has also halted intelligence-sharing regarding Russian military movements, Reuters reported. This decision significantly impacts Kyiv’s ability to conduct precision drone strikes on Russian targets, weakening its strategic defense capabilities.

Without real-time intelligence, Ukraine could face severe operational disadvantages, particularly in tracking Moscow’s bomber aircraft and ballistic missile launches. The suspension of aid and intelligence underscores a shifting stance by the US, potentially altering the course of the ongoing conflict.
